My name is Marou Fujiwara. Five generations of my family died in service to this domain. I am trying to be the first one to die of thirst instead.

The temple priests tell it plain. A Yoma is hunger with teeth. Kill it, burn it, bury the ashes under stone. Never taste the blood. Never. Because the blood remembers being a god, and it will teach your blood the same trick. One taste and you stop being hungry forever. One taste and you stop being a man forever.

My father laughed at the priests. Then late in his life he stopped laughing and started drinking with Commander Tsunemoto every night. He came home smelling sweet and sharp under the sake, like a cut gone sour. Then he stopped coming home. When he died his eyes were the wrong color. Nobody in the house talks about that part. I think about it every time my hands shake.

The village bell rings.

Another Yoma attack. My hands shake as I reach for my sword. I knock over two sake bottles. Empty. Both of them. Commander's gift sake. I threw them, or I drank them, or both. The last dregs in one smell sweet and bitter, like meat gone rotten. I know that smell now. It's already in me. The room tilts. The evening sun comes through the door too bright and my stomach turns over. I get my sword in my hand on the third try.

Outside the street is empty. Doors shut. Shutters down. Everybody knows the drill. Everybody except me.

Then I see the Yoma.

It wears a child's shape. Small. Bare feet. But the arms go too long past the knees, and the elbows bend backward, and the head sits tilted, listening to music nobody else hears. It's listening to the same reasonable voice that says my name kindly. It watches me come. It can smell what I am. It can smell what I am trying not to be.

In my prime I would have ended this in four moves. Cut, turn, cut, burn. Clean. Now I can barely keep my feet under me. My grip slips on the handle, hands dripping with sweat and sake.

It tilts its head further. And then I charge. But my timing is off by half a breath. My sword goes wide past its shoulder and its claws open my side. Heat across the ribs, wet down my leg. Mine and its both across the dirt. The smell hits me so hard my eyes water, because under the blood there is the other smell. Sweet and sharp and rotten.

My gut answers it before my head does. I know this pull. It's the commander's cup in my own gut. One cup to steady the hands. One cup to please the commander. One cup to keep serving the people. What harm could there be. I see his hands. Lacquered set, two cups. He pours with deliberate precision. He pushes my cup closer and smiles wider with every cup.

I force myself to vomit instead. Bile and nothing. Anything to fight that thirst.

It comes in fast. I try to parry. My hands shake so bad the blade clatters out of my grip into the mud.

So much for five generations of Fujiwara steel.

We go down together in the filth. No stance. No form. Knees and elbows and teeth. My fingers find its eye sockets. Soft. Wet. I push in and something broken and desperate comes out of my throat.

"Five generations of Fujiwara steel, and it comes down to thumbs"

Its skull gives under my hands. Messy. It kicks once, hard, against my bad ribs. Then it stops.

Quiet. Just my breathing. Just the flies starting to gather.

No pride in this. None. I lie in the mud covered in gore, retching on nothing. My sword is three feet away and it might as well be three miles. My body seizes. The shakes run from my hands up through my arms into my jaw. I need sake. Right now.

Villagers come out once it's safe. The ones who used to bow to me. They hurry past with their eyes down. A woman pulls her boy close when I look at him. I do not blame her. I look like what I am fighting.

I crawl toward the sword. My fingers miss it twice.

And there, mixed with the mud, is the Yoma's blood. Dark. Thick. It pools around my hand. The sweet-sharp smell rises off it. My stomach turns and my mouth waters at the same time. Sake. Blood. Same pull. It only cares that you feed it.

Just one taste would end this shaking. Just one taste and the hands go steady. Just one taste and nobody hurries past me ever again. Just one taste and my fingers close clean around the handle.

Just one taste and I stop the thirst.

Just one taste and I become a god.

My father is in my head. His eyes the wrong color at the end. The sweet-sharp smell on him when he came home. The way Tsunemoto kept pouring and my father kept drinking and everybody called it honor.

The priests say burn it. Bury it under stone. Never taste it.

My fingers twitch toward the dark puddle.
